COPYRIGHT INFO

We know it can be confusing – you have paid for photographs so you own them completely, right?

Well… no. When you engage my services (or the services of any other professional photographer) you are hiring my time, my expertise, my skill and a license to use a certain number of images that I have produced.

As a matter of law, in the UK, the copyright to the images created by a photographer stay with that photographer (or their estate) up to 70 years after they die. This is because the photographs we create are our intellectual property.

WHO OWNS COPYRIGHT?

DO YOU NEED COPYRIGHT?

In the overwhelming majority of cases, the answer to this is no.

Here is a quick test:

Are you a celebrity who is concerned their images will be used by the media?
Do you plan on selling your wedding photographs for profit?
Do you plan on using your wedding photographs commercially for things such as print advertisements or website stock imagery?
Do you plan on selling copies of your wedding photographs on products such as t-shirts, keychains and novelty hats?
Do you plan on opening a wedding photography business and passing your wedding photographs off as photos you have taken?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will likely need a commercial use license. If you answered yes to questions 1 or 5, you will probably need copyright.

For everyone else – you don’t need copyright. You need a license to privately use, print and redistribute. Good news is that you will already have that when you hire us to provide you with wedding or family photography. If you have hired us for commercial photography, you will have a pre-negotiated commercial use license.

All copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property rights on this site, are the property of Laura May Photography.

No permission, either express or implied, is granted for the electronic transmission, storage, retrieval, or printing of the photographs contained on lauramayphotography.co.uk (and related domains) and any other sites displaying photographs by Laura May Photography, other than that which is related to the normal “caching” practices of web browsers.

No parties/individuals visiting or viewing images from lauramayphotography.co.uk and any other sites displaying photographs by Laura May Photography, may otherwise copy, modify, publish, transmit, or distribute the contents of the photographs found herein. Express written permission must be granted, on behalf of the photographer (copyright holder, Laura May Photography), in order to use these photographs for any purpose that is not outlined above.

The use of any image as the basis for another photographic concept, illustration or reproduction (digital, artist rendered or alike) is a violation of the law and is strictly prohibited.  

Reproduction rights (if and when granted) are strictly limited to the use specified on the license you receive and only once final payment has been taken in cleared funds. An agreement must be reached with Laura May Photography before the images are used for a different purpose or after the duration license has expired. Laura May Photography reserves the right to charge a penalty fee of £100 per image per use (in addition to the customary charge) if images are used for purposes other than what is shown on the license you hold.

All original digital files created by Laura May Photography remain the property of the Laura Stanley / Laura May Photography.
