An honest guide of 7 tips on how to choose your wedding photographer , someone who truly gets you.
You’re engaged, yay! Now it’s time to research and choose your wedding photographer. Keep reading for my 7 tips on how to find someone whose work you love and—most importantly—whose personality you vibe with.
Before we dive into the tips, first let me say: Please make sure you take some time to enjoy the engagement before you jump head first into wedding planning!
That is, after you’ve booked me of course 😉
There are loads of options when it comes to wedding photography. You need to choose a wedding photographer who is just your cup of tea.
But where do you start?

1. Wedding Photography Approach
Think about what’s important to you to be photographed, how do you want to feel when you look back at your gallery? I like to concentrate on capturing the day naturally, with a short amount of pre-agreed time allocated to capturing couple photographs and key family groups.
I also like to photograph the details as I see them, as the day goes by. I give a little direction throughout the day – “step into this lovely light for me” or “Sarah, just look over your shoulder at me” etc!
The goal? A gallery reflecting your day just as it felt, beautifully captured.

2. Consider the Photography and Editing Style
Before you begin your search, it’s crucial to understand your preferred photography style and edit. Do you envision classic and elegant photos, or are you drawn to a more candid, documentary style? Each photographer has a signature style, so finding one that matches your vision will ensure your photos truly reflect your unique love story. I like to describe my photography as a blend of documentary moments and timeless and classic portraits.
If you look at my edit (the colours in the final photo), it’s very true to life. I don’t do too much to the colour in post production. If you look around you’ll find some photographers have a really light edit, some have quite a dark edit, some quite orange toned.
So the question is: what attracts you the most? This comes down to personal taste.

3. Look at their Portfolio of Real Weddings
Once you’ve identified potential photographers, delve into their portfolios. Look for images that resonate with you and check for consistency in quality and style across different weddings. A good portfolio not only displays the photographer’s best work but also showcases their ability to capture a variety of moments.
4. Think Beyond Budget
Budget matters, of course. But when it comes to your wedding photography, it shouldn’t be the first question. Instead, focus on value.
These are the images that will stay with you for a lifetime. They’ll be framed in your home, shared with family, revisited on anniversaries. They’re more than documentation – they’re a part of your legacy.
So rather than asking, “What can we get for X amount?”… ask, “Who do we trust to tell our story in a way that feels honest and meaningful?”

5. Read Reviews & Testimonials
What better way to gauge a photographer’s professionalism and ability to deliver than hearing from past clients?
You can read mu Google Reviews here.
Reviews and testimonials can provide insight into how the photographer handles the wedding day pressures and interacts with guests. Positive feedback from other couples can be a strong endorsement of a photographer’s skills and work ethic.
6. Ask About Wedding Day Backup Plans
When discussing your wedding day, it’s important to ask photographers about their backup plans. Inquire about what happens if they become unavailable due to an emergency or if their equipment fails. Ensuring your photographer has a solid contingency plan in place will give you peace of mind.
By taking these steps, you can confidently select a wedding photographer who will capture your day perfectly and provide you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

7. Get to Know the Photographer
You’re going to spend one of the most intimate, emotional days of your life with this person. So beyond their portfolio, it’s worth asking: Do we actually like them? Do they make us feel seen, calm, understood?
Follow them on Instagram. Watch their stories. Read their blog. Read their Google Reviews. Book a call. You’ll know when it clicks.
Clients often tell me they felt totally at ease from the very first chat – and that’s something I intentionally prioritise. My approach is calm, intuitive, and focused on genuine connection so that when your wedding day comes, it all flows effortlessly.
