How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer: What Really Matters

An honest guide on how to choose your wedding photographer , someone who truly gets you.

You’ve said yes! The ring is on, and the bubbles have been poured. In the first few weeks after getting engaged, it can feel like a whirlwind of to-dos and timelines – especially when it comes to choosing your wedding photographer.

You’re probably realising just how many photographers there are. A lot! Each with their own style, their own tone, their own Instagram vibe. Too much choice? So let’s make it simpler.

This guide is here to cut through the noise. It’s not about what trends are in or what your cousin did. It’s about finding someone who feels like the right fit for you. Someone who captures moments honestly, who puts you at ease, and who creates images you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

1. Start with What Matters Most to You

Before you get lost in Pinterest boards or price lists, take a moment to talk with your partner about what’s most important to you. Do you want photography that captures emotion and movement? Are those natural, unposed moments your priority? Is having beautiful portraits with your closest people non-negotiable?

I work in a way that allows the day to unfold naturally, gently guiding when needed (for example, during couple portraits or family group shots), while documenting everything else as it happens. The quiet, in-between moments and the joy that unfolds when you’re just being yourselves.

The goal? A gallery reflecting your day truthfully and beautifully.

You can read more about my approach here.

2. Consider the Editing Style

When you scroll through different photographers’ websites or Instagram grids, notice the colouring and style of the final images. This is called ‘the Edit’.

My editing style is timeless and colours are true to life. I don’t follow trends or overly stylise my images – because your gallery should still feel like you ten, twenty, fifty years from now.

Some photographers have a very light and airy style, others go moodier or more orange-toned. None are wrong – but you need to find the one that speaks to you. Ask yourself: Can I see us in these photos? Do they feel natural? Can I imagine showing these to our future children or printing them for our home?

3. Think Beyond Budget

Budget matters, of course. But when it comes to your wedding photography, it shouldn’t be the first question. Instead, focus on value.

These are the images that will stay with you for a lifetime. They’ll be framed in your home, shared with family, revisited on anniversaries. They’re more than documentation – they’re a part of your legacy.

So rather than asking, “What can we get for X amount?”… ask, “Who do we trust to tell our story in a way that feels honest and meaningful?”

4. Get to Know the Photographer

You’re going to spend one of the most intimate, emotional days of your life with this person. So beyond their portfolio, it’s worth asking: Do we actually like them? Do they make us feel seen, calm, understood?

Follow them on Instagram. Watch their stories. Read their blog. Read their Google Reviews (you can read mine here.) Book a call. You’ll know when it clicks.

Clients often tell me they felt totally at ease from the very first chat – and that’s something I intentionally prioritise. My approach is calm, intuitive, and focused on genuine connection so that when your wedding day comes, it all flows effortlessly.

Lulu and Simon’s small and intimate Chelsea wedding was such a wonderful day to be a part of: both the style and the joy were sky high. What I loved most about it (other than Lulu’s incredible dress…more on that in a minute) is how she and Simon did things their own way, and had […]
