At Sian and Kieran’s Rowton Castle wedding, the first dance wasn’t planned.
It was a heatwave. The sun was setting behind the castle. Someone suggested moving outside. A saxophonist started playing. And suddenly everyone was dancing, completely spontaneously, in golden light that made the whole thing feel like we were in the balearic islands.
I’m Laura, hi!, a Shropshire wedding photographer specialising in romantic, fine-art documentary-led photography. I’ve photographed more weddings at Rowton Castle than almost anywhere else, across every season and every kind of celebration. It’s a venue I know intimately and return to with enthusiasm every single time.
What makes Rowton Castle different
It’s a castle. A proper one!! With a long driveway that makes you go “ooohhh” before you’ve even arrived, a prominent position in the grounds, and that unmistakable sense of occasion that other wedding venues, however beautiful, can’t quite replicate.
In spring and summer the grounds are extraordinary. Colourful flowers framing the side of the castle, a stone water fountain at the front, the kind of setting that looks incredible without needing anything added to it. When the sun sets behind the castle at the back of the building, it’s one of the most beautiful backdrops I photograph anywhere in Shropshire.
It’s also exclusively yours. One wedding, all the rooms, all the grounds – plus plenty of bedrooms for guests to stay over. That changes the energy of a wedding in a way that’s hard to describe until you’ve experienced it. Nobody’s rushing for taxis, everyone’s relaxed and enjoying the party.
The spaces
The ceremony and dining room has real warmth – a fireplace, a chandelier, big windows letting in the light, neutral cream tones that work beautifully with almost any colour palette or styling. It’s elegant without being imposing, which means it photographs well whether you’ve dressed it simply or gone all out with florals.
One note – Rowton isn’t the largest venue for indoor portrait options on a wet day. It’s absolutely workable and I’ve done it many times, but if an all-weather backup is your top priority it’s worth factoring in. In every other respect, it more than delivers.
The grounds
Portrait options at Rowton are varied. The colourful flower beds at the front, the stone fountain, the long driveway, and the back of the castle when the light turns golden in the evening. I’ve photographed couples in all of these spots across different seasons and each one is gorgeous.
In summer especially, the grounds are stunning. The kind of place where you wander out for portraits and end up staying longer than planned because the light keeps getting better. You’re guaranteed to hear me exclaim “OMG look at the light!” at least once.
